Common Questions and Answers about UHMW blower shoes
Q. 1.- What if my blower model of Frontier blower is not listed either here or on this site?
A. 1. - Confirm you are listing the blower model correctly. There are many variations of the blower models. If you have the blower model listed correctly, make sure your Frontier Snow Blower doesn’t have welded on blower shoes, as many models weld on their shoes.
If you are sure your blower model uses bolt on blower shoes and we don’t list them, please contact us using the “Contact Us” site and we will work to help you find a solution.
Q. 1a.- If my Frontier Blower or any other brand or model blower has bolt on blower shoes and isn’t listed here, can your company make blower shoes for my blower?
A. 1a. - It’s very likely and we would appreciate the chance to work with you on this. Please use the “Contact Us” section and we will give you a written summary of what we need to see if we can make the shoes for you. We can also give you an idea of what the shoes will cost once we know the dimensions of the shoes you want to replace,.
Q. 1.b.- How long does it take to get custom made blower shoes?
A. 1. b.- Depending upon the time of year, custom UHMW shoes can be built and shipped to you usually within 15 to 20 business days (Mon - Fri, excluding holidays, etc) During winter months, its likely to take longer as our business volume is highest when snow needs to be cleared.
Q. 1. c. - Do custom made shoes cost more than UHMW shoes you have on your website? Can you give me an idea of the cost for Custom Made UHMW shoes?
A. 1. c.- The size of the shoes is a very big factor in their cost, based upon the amount and width of UHMW material they require as well as the machine time to produce the shoes. We have made custom shoes which are as small as 5” long and 2.5” tall and 1/2” thick. We just finished a pair of custom blower shoes that were 34” long, 10” tall and 1.5” thick. We will give you a cost once we know the size of the shoes you need.
Q. 1. d.- Is the blowers operating weight important in the development of the replacement UHMW blower shoes?
A. 1. d.- Yes, weight is very important because the purpose of the shoes is to support the snowblower on the pavement. These rear Frontier Snowblowers range in weight from around 500 pounds to 1,607 pounds. The shoes need to be thicker, longer and likely taller to properly carry the larger blowers weight.
A rear 3ph blower which weighs 500 pounds can use UHMW shoes which are roughly 12” long and 5 inches tall and 1/2” thick.
These shoes are made based upon the weight of the SB 1174 blower, as it weighs 150+ pounds more than the SB1154 which uses the same steel shoe part numbers.
A rear 3ph blower weighing 1,600+ pounds, needs shoes which are likely 18” to 22” long, 9” tall and 1.25” or 1.5” thick.
Q.2.- How long will the UHMW shoes last with normal use?
A. 2.- UHMW will often outlast mild steel, which is what most blower shoes are made of. Although UHMW is a form of plastic, its the most wear resistant plastic material in the world. It very common for residential use snowblowers to get 5+ years of use out of their snowblower shoes. Remember, when the one edge is worn, you can flip the shoes over and use the other side as most of our UHMW blower shoes are double sided. It’s like getting two sets of shoes with each purchase.
Q. 3. - Do i need to be concerned about breaking the UHMW shoes since they are plastic.?
A. 3.- No, the UHMW is extremely strong, highly wear resistant and has very low surface friction, its also very tough. We make the shoes to support the blowers they are used on.
If you break a SBS, LLC UHMW shoe during the first 12 months of ownership, in the course of normal use and aren’t abusing nor have not misused it, send us pictures and a detailed description of what happened and return the broken shoe to us. If we find the shoe failed during normal use, We will ship a replacement shoe at no cost as long as you follow our policy.
Q 4. - What complaints have those who have bought UHMW shoes had about their purchase of the shoes?
A. 4. - They complain they should have purchased the shoes much sooner and wish they had. Then they would have torn up their pavement less and also wouldn’t have rust stains all over the garage floor where the blower sits when parked. Seriously, we have had no complaints about the product of a negative nature.
Q. 5.- What is the biggest surprise for those who buy the UHMW shoes?
A. 5.- How they can move the smaller blowers now by hand by themselves, when before they couldn’t budge their blower when using the steel shoes. Those who replace both the shoes and the wear bar are even happier with the UHMW replacing all the steel wear surfaces that were grinding on the pavement.
Q. 6. - Should the steel wear bar be replaced under the main blower housing?
A. 6.- Absolutely, if at all possible. We are considering alternatives for those blowers which have welded on steel wear bars and hope to be able to offer every snowblower owner an option to having the steel wear bar grinding on the pavement. As we develop solutions, we will add them to our website.
Q. 7.- Why does the steel wear bar exist under the snowblowers? What’s it supposed to do for the snowblower owner?
A.7.- The steel wear bar is simply to prevent the blower housing from riding directly on the pavement and being damaged. The steel wear bar is there solely to wear so the steel blower housing base and end panels don’t grind directly on the pavement. Once the steel wear bar is worn away, then the blower housing will grind directly on the pavement wearing holes through it and destroying the blower.
Q.8.- Why doesn’t Frontier or Deere use the UHMW for the shoes and the blower wear bars when they make the snowblower?
A.8.- Cost. The mild steel wear bar on your Frontier blower costs pennies compared to the cost of UHMW. A sheet of UHMW to make the shoes and blower wear bars costs about 12 to 18 times the cost of the steel they use.
A 4’ x 10’ sheet of the UHMW which is 1” thick costs about $1,600 to $1,900 with shipping. A sheet of mild steel to form the shoes or wear bars cost about $110 to $160. Also, the metal costs less to cut and shape.
Q. 9.- Can you give an example of Deere’s own cost differences for these same products when made of steel or made of UHMW?
A. 9.- Sure. A snowblower steel wear bar for the Frontier SB1280F sells under part number 5RD669013 for $181.97. Deere offers a UHMW, or as Deere calls it, ‘Hard Plastic” wear bar for the same blower, that is sold under part number 5RDF0097 for $727.94 or roughly 3.5 times the price of the mild steel wear bar.
Q. 10. - Why should I spend $725 for a UHMW edge from Deere when I can get the steel wear edge for less than $200?
A. 10.- You are buying the reduction of damage to your pavement surfaces. Whether you have a concrete driveway or an asphalt driveway, they are both expensive to maintain and repair and ultimately, to replace.
The smart approach is to prolong the life of the pavement and also protect the snowblower against wear and damage. The price savings of the difference between steel and UHMW won’t go very far to repair the damage to the pavement the steel will cause.
In the photos are pictures of damaged pavement in my neighborhood for the owners who USED to use steel edges. They learned how important it is to protect the pavement and to switch to UHMW.
