Includes Ground Shipping to Lower 48 States
If you have one of the following Frontier rear 3 Point hitch plows that is 108” wide, this listing is for the rubber or UHMW edge for your plow.
Important note about this products production and shipping due to its length. Since this product is over 8’ in length, we produce this edge in two sections which are joined in the middle of the plow. The plow edge length at over 98” exceeds our machines cutting table length, so we must make all pieces longer than 8’ in two sections.
The thickness of the material will prevent there being any movement or deflection of the material at the joining seam. We mention this in full disclosure as we prefer to cut all snow edges in one continuous length, but when the parts are longer than our production machines, we must make the adjustments to be able to offer you this large plow’s edge.
Having the larger plow edges in two pieces does make their installation and handling easier. When these large plows reach one length, they are difficult to handle and install when working alone. Having them in two pieces also makes the shipping easier as we can use UPS for these shipments.
Frontier RB2309 and RB2409
Frontier offers these two models of their 108” wide rear 3ph blades. These blades are all very heavy and require a plow edge designed to support the plows weight and the scraping forces being applied.
Plows in this category weigh from 1,350 pounds to as much as 1,475 pounds. This requires a properly made rubber or UHMW edge to support this plows use in rough winter conditions. Our edges are made to be tough and are built for the plow. Some sell edges that only vary by their length. Clearly, as a plows width and its weight increase the edge must take these factors into consideration.
Why you should replace the steel plow edge for use clearing snow on pavement
All of these blades are sold new with the steel wear edge. This steel edge and the width and weight of the plow will cause surface abrasion and damage when used to clear snow or ice from pavement. This surface abrasion damage can become significant and require repair or replacement of the pavement.
We provide solutions which reduce and largely eliminate this surface friction. We use carefully selected rubber material as well as UHMW to provide a range of choices to meet our customers plow use and snow clearing needs.
Hydraulic Down Pressure on the plow makes the surface friction even greater
Many of these larger 3ph plows are utilizing hydraulic top links as well as hydraulic angling cylinders. The hydraulic pressure increases the surface friction and accelerates the damage to the pavement. The best way to address the surface friction of this blade or any blade is to change the material which is actually cleaning the pavement.
Due to the size and weight of these Plows, we offer only our toughest and strongest plow edges for use on these plows. These are our Severe Duty / Commercial Duty Plow edges. Here is a description of these edges in both our Rubber and UHMW product materials for these plow edges.
Severe Duty / Commercial Duty Rubber Plow Edge Kit includes the following custom machined components
One 1.5” thick single layer Rubber Plow Edge
The 1.5” thick rubber edge is 8” Tall (top to bottom)
UHMW Mounting Straps, custom machined to hold the rubber edge and allow for a full range of adjustment.
Corrosion Resistant Hardware for Installation
Severe Duty / Commercial Duty UHMW Plow Edge
One 1.5” thick x 8” tall UHMW Plow Edge
Corrosion Resistant Hardware for Installation including special clamping washers on the Front Side of the UHMW and washers and lock nuts for the back side of the plow.
All of our Plow Edges for these Plows are Double Sided and Adjustable for you to get the most from your plow edge during its use.
When you have worn down the first side of our plow edge, remove the edge, flip it over and reinstall it and start with a second, new wear edge.
Plow Edge Kit or Plow Edge, which should I order and why?
The Plow Edge Kit is for new customers who are switching their plow from the steel blade to our rubber plow edge kit. Our Plow Edge Kits include the following when ordered;
Our custom machined, double sided rubber plow edge which is fully adjustable with vertical machined slots.
The custom machined UHMW Mounting Straps to secure the rubber plow edge properly and to provide full edge adjustment during use.
Corrosion Resistant hardware to install the rubber plow edge and UHMW straps on your plow blade.
Our Plow Edges are replacement rubber edges for those customers who are already using our Plow Edge Kits. When the rubber edge has reached the end of its life, you can purchase a replacement rubber plow edge and use the UHMW straps from the original kit to install the new rubber plow edges.
Our edges and kits always ship with new hardware so the plow is easy to install and adjust. I dislike working with rusted or damaged hardware and I don’t want our customers to have to use old bolts to install a new plow wear edge.
Please note, the plows steel wear edge MUST be removed from the plow when installing our rubber or UHMW plow edges. The steel can not be used to secure the rubber edge as its not the proper size and also fails to provide the clearances for the rubber or UHMW edges to work properly. When you remove the steel plow wear edge from your plow, put the old bolts in the steel edge as your new kit will include the proper new hardware for installation on your plow.
Rubber or UHMW Edges to replace the Steel Plow Wear Edge
We have created replacement plow edges which are either rubber or UHMW, to replace the steel plow wear edge. The benefit of the UHMW or Rubber plow edges include;
Quiet snow removal without the surface grinding and pavement abrasion of the steel surface on either asphalt or concrete.
The Rubber plow edge cleans the surface more uniformly by contouring to the pavement better than the steel edge.
The Rubber edge will also remove moisture and water from the pavement surface that often will otherwise freeze and cause black ice.
The UHMW Edge is a very low friction material which is very durable and well suited to scrape the pavement clean of hard packed snow and ice.
The UHMW material is self lubricating and glides across the pavement with much less surface friction. The lower friction reduces surface wear and abrasion on both the pavement and the blade edge
How to select either the rubber or UHMW wear edge for the 3ph plow. The best way to select the plow edge is to carefully consider the surface you will be clearing with the plow. This section breaks down the different pavement types and describes the best plow edge for use in each situation.
Rough or Uneven Pavement or Pavement which has already experienced a number of repairs, such as pot hole repair, road crack filling, etc.
If the pavement surface is uneven due to wear and use or from seasonal heaving and sinking, or if the surface of the pavement has endured previous repairs, the rubber edge is recommended as that edge is able to contour to the pavement and clear away snow more uniformly based upon its flexibility. The rubber edge is also less likely to displace prior pavement repairs or surface crack filling.
For Snow clearing on lawn or grass areas or those adjacent to the Pavement
The plow rubber edges are preferred. Their ability to flex while clearing snow results in less surface damage and leaves the original surface with less disruption or damage. It’s very important to be careful with hydraulic down pressure when clearing on grass or “soft” surface areas as the hydraulic down pressure can still cause the rubber to displace the surface if excess down pressure is applied.
Gravel and Loose Material surface Areas
On loose surface materials, the rubber edges or the UHMW edge will both work, but its crucial to pay attention to the blades down force being applied. Until the ground freezes, care to control the blades down pressure on the surface has to be moderated to avoid displacing the surface material.
Asphalt Surfaces, both initial pavement and established surfaces
Asphalt is a material designed to remain flexible throughout its life time. Asphalts ability to flex helps to delay the damage which can result from ground freezing and surface heaving and then the following thawing and ground contraction. While concrete is laid with dedicated expansion joints to allow the sections of pavement to move independently of one another during these freeze and thaw cycles, asphalt remains softer its entire life and is laid and applied to surfaces without the expansion joints found in concrete.
Two times during the asphalts life cycle it is particularly vulnerable to surface damage from a variety of objects. These two times are
when the asphalt is first laid and when it is still undergoing its natural curing process and
when the asphalt had been repaired with surface patching or crack filling.
Asphalt which has been in use for approximately 9 months to 1 year is usually fully cured and most durable after this process has occurred. When asphalt is first applied, its very black and as the surface is exposed to the sunlight and use, the pavement “grays in” or becomes lighter in color as the surface hardens, etc.
During the 1st year of its life, or when the pavement base has been applied and the plan is to add the “finish coat” in the spring, extra care should be used when the initial coat of asphalt is on the surface. During this time, the rubber plow edge is the recommended edge to least likely cause any damage to the surface from snow clearing.
During this early stage of its life, the asphalt is soft and the UHMW can cause some abrasion damage on the areas of the pavement which are slightly higher or in the corners, curves or when switchbacks are used, the angles of the surface can cause the UHMW to dig into the pavement if great care is not used when clearing the surface.
Brick pavers, Finished or Colored Concrete with surface Patterns or other “specialty surfaces”
Surfaces which have numerous or frequent joints on the surface should be cleared of snow with a rubber edge or a UHMW edge can be used but care to not apply down pressure on the blade is very important. The seams or joints between the surface materials can allow the surface to be displaced by the blade edge so care needs to be used. The softer the plow edge material, the less likely the blade is to damage or displace the surface.
Concrete Surfaces
Once fully cured after installation, the concrete surfaces are able to be cleared with the UHMW or rubber plow edges. The advantage of using the UHMW edge is you can use the UHMW to “scrape” on hard packed snow or ice and remove it from the pavement.
The larger rubber edges are also very good at clearing the packed down snow and hard pack, but the UHMW will be the best if the snow is often driven over or packed down before it can be cleared with the rear blade. The UHMW is also the best tool to scrape on ice on the surface to remove it.
To avoid impact damage and frictional damage the UHMW is better than steel on these surfaces.
Common Questions and Answers about these UHMW and Rubber Edges on larger plows.
Q. 1. - Can a hydraulic top link be used with a plow that has a UHMW or rubber plow edge replacing the steel plow edge?
A. 1. - Certainly. Just use the down force in moderation to avoid causing extra edge wear or possible surface damage. Applying unneeded down force doesn’t improve the snow clearing result, it just causes more wear on the edge.
Q. 2. - Which edge material will last longer, the UHMW or rubber plow edge?
A. 2.- The UHMW will often outlast the steel wear edge it replaces. The rubber will not last as long, but with reasonable use, the rubber edge should provide many years of reliable wear and use.
Q.3. How long can the Rubber plow edge be used before needing to be replaced?
A.3. - Typically, the rubber plow edge will last the equivalent of 150 to 175 miles of straight line snow clearing before needing to be replaced. This means if you put on the new rubber wear edge on the plow and lowered the plow to the pavement to clear snow or ice, the plow edge would last the 150 miles of continuous clearing, before needing to be replaced. Of course, the down pressure applied and the surface type are going to be important variables in the process.
Bottom line, the rubber we use is special and wears very well when used properly. Just as the tires on your vehicle wear with surface friction, the rubber plow edge reacts the same way.
Q. 4. - Is it easy to replace the steel plow edge on these rear blades?
A. 4.- The steel plow wear edges are held in place with plow bolts The plow bolts can be removed with typical hand tools such as a ratchet and socket. Larger plows you will likely want to use an impact gun to remove the steel blade hardware due to its tightness.
Before attempting to remove any plow bolts, Make sure to spray all plow hardware with a good penetrating lubricant to allow it to work on any bolts which might be corroded or difficult to remove.
Q. 5. - What safety tips should anyone replacing a plows steel wear edge be aware of?
A. 5. The steel plow edge is sharp from rubbing on the pavement when previously used for snow clearing. Make sure to be aware of the result of surface friction on the plow blade. Also, wear gloves as not only will the plows steel edge be sharp from the surface abrasion, the steel edge is heavy. The 96” long steel plow edge on the Frontier Plows can weigh more than 100 pounds. Don’t underestimate this weight as it can lead to injury .
Also NEVER work under any tractor implement which is being supported by hydraulic lines or pressure. PLEASE make sure to provide safe support of any plow or implement you are working on before working around such equipment. Use locking jack stands or a similar support under anything which is lifted or held with a machines hydraulic pressure. You don’t want a hose or line breaking and allowing the implement to drop and cause injury or worse.
Q. 6. - Any other important reminders for those changing their steel plow edge?
A.6.- Yes, make sure the plow is painted and any bare metal is repainted to avoid rust. We don‘t want any rust to form on the plows face under the rubber or UHMW edge being installed on the plow. Also use care when handling the plow edge due to its weight and sharp edges, etc.
Plow Edge Kit versus a Replacement Plow Edge
Who should order the rubber Plow Edge KIT and who should purchase the rubber Plow Edge for their plow?
For customers who are removing their steel plow edge and installing our new rubber plow edge, they should purchase the PLOW EDGE KIT, as it includes the rubber plow edge, the UHMW straps to install the rubber edge on the plow and all of the hardware needed to properly install the edge.
The PLOW EDGE is for those who are already using our rubber plow edge and need a replacement rubber edge only due to wear, etc..
Our plow edge kits and plow edges ALWAYS ship with new hardware to make their installation and future adjustment during use trouble free.
The plow edge kit includes the following when ordered from SulleyBear Solutions, LLC
Custom machined rubber plow edge which is double sided for extended wear life, with vertical mounting slots.
UHMW Mounting Straps to secure the rubber plow edge to the plows steel moldboard
Hardware for installing the plow edge kit on the blade
Can you use the steel plow edge to mount and secure the rubber or UHMW plow edge on a Frontier rear 3ph plow?
No, you must use the custom designed mounting straps to properly secure the rubber plow edge to the plow for best use and wear results. The steel plow edge is too long and also doesn’t provide the proper clearance under the plow for our rubber or UHMW edges to work.
What makes the UHMW straps the best solution for mounting the new rubber plow edge?
The UHMW straps are machined to perfectly align with the mounting position of the plow edge’s rubber slots and so the bolts which hold the rubber edge on the plow are centered correctly, the right length and in the proper location.
The UHMW straps are the right length and width to secure the rubber plow edge. Also, the UHMW straps are very strong, very dense in material, can’t rust, won’t dent or twist like steel straps and they also are very strong for absorbing impacts during use, but keeping the plow edge in place and secure.
Please note, the UHMW straps are designed for securing the rubber plow edge on your plow. They are not intended to be used to scrape the surface directly as they are not the proper size for such activity.
