Common Questions and Answers about our Pavement Protection Package

Q. 1. - What is UHMW and why is it superior to the steel shoes and wear bar it replaces?

A. 1.- UHMW is Ultra High Molecular Weight Polypropylene, which is the most wear resistant and low surface friction plastic material in the world. It is the preferred material for surfaces that endure friction as it has outstanding wear characteristics, greatly reduces the surface friction and noise between the blower and the pavement.

Q. 2.- If UHMW is plastic, won’t it wear out quickly when used between the snow blower and the pavement?

A. 2.-UHMW is extremely strong and unlike the plastic which many people think of. UHMW is also a very expensive material, because of the manufacturing process that makes it both very strong and very durable. In many applications, the UHMW will last as long as steel edges it replaces. UHMW plow edges are used to clear commercial airport runways because it doesn’t damage the pavement like steel does.

Q. 3.- How long should the UHMW wear bar and shoes last on these blowers?

A. 3. - UHMW is often described as “scrapes and wears like steel”. Used properly, these UHMW shoes and wear bar last as long as the steel edges and wear bars they replace.

Q. 4. - I noticed the UHMW shoes are much taller and even wider than the steel shoes they replace. Why are these shoes made this way?

A. 4.- Our UHMW shoes are double sided, which means they have two wear sides, unlike the steel shoes that have one wear side, on the bottom of the shoes. When you wear out the bottom of our UHMW shoes, unbolt the shoes, flip them over and reinstall them and start with a new wear edge. Our shoes provide two complete sets of shoes making them this way.

Q. 5. - The UHMW wear bar is thicker than the steel wear bar it replaces. Is that going to affect how the blower clears snow?

A. 5. - No, because the blower will ride just 1” higher than it presently does on the steel wear bar. The reason our wear bar is thicker is because we recess our mounting hardware so it won’t scrape on the pavement until its time to replace the wear bar.

Q. 6. - How long does it take to replace the steel wear bar and steel shoes on this blower and install the Pavement Protection Product?

A. 6.- The shoes are held on with 2 bolts per shoe, the wear bar 8 bolts. Most can replace the steel wear bar and shoes in an hour or less.

Q. 7. - Do I have to drill or cut anything to make it fit on my blower?

A. 7. - No, our parts are machined to fit properly and without any modifications. Unless your blower has been modified, it should not require you to cut or drill on the new UHMW parts. They should bolt right onto your blower.

Q. 8.- What’s the problem people run into when replacing the steel wear bar and shoes?

A. 8.- In a word, RUST. Spray the bolts with penetrating fluid and allow it to work. Rust is one of the reasons we use UHMW as UHMW can’t rust. It’s also why we spend 4x the cost for stainless hardware to install your new wear bar and shoes. Stainless hardware won’t rust like the bolts on your blower. If you are replacing the shoes and wear bar with our UHMW products, you won’t have to deal with these parts or hardware ever rusting again.

Q. 9. - Is there anything about the UHMW wear bar or shoes which those who buy them complain or aren’t thrilled about?‍ ‍

A. 9.- Its the higher cost of the parts. The reason the UHMW parts cost much more than the steel shoes or wear bar is due to the material costs and also the higher machining and production costs. UHMW material costs 12 to 15 times MORE than the steel used to make the same parts. Also, the machining of the UHMW requires specialized machines to cut and make these parts. As a result the UHMW parts cost more than the steel parts they replace.

Q. 10.- If I can purchase the steel wear bar and shoes for less than the UHMW wear bar and shoes, why spend more money on the UHMW wear bar and shoes?

A. 10.- To prevent the damage to the driveway which costs tens of thousands of dollars to repair and makes the investment in this Pavement Protection Package .

Tools Needed to Replace the Steel wear bar and Shoes

  • Penetrating Oil to help loosen rusty hardware

  • Sockets and ratchet or open end wrenches to fit the bolts

  • Drill and bit may be required if bolts are rusty and damaged and have to be drilled.

A special note when using Stainless Steel Hardware.

Our Pavement Protection Packages ALWAYS include Stainless steel hardware. We use stainless hardware to prevent future rust or corrosion on this hardware. Stainless hardware won’t rust or corrode. Simple rules to always follow to avoid possible trouble or complications.

  • Always spray all bolts and nuts with silicone or another approved lubricant.

  • Do not over tighten the hardware. Here are the torque specs for lubricated hardware.

    • Edge bolts are ¼ x3/4 carriage bolts, 72 inch pounds or 6 foot pounds of maximum torque

    • Shoe bolts are 5/16 bolts, max torque is 132 inch pounds or 13 ft lbs.

  • Do not use impact or battery powered tools to tighten these bolts.

  • If you don’t have a torque wrench, tighten with two combination wrenches to where they are “snug”.

  • The hardware uses lock nuts and they should remain tight.

  • Please follow the written installation and use instructions.
