Woods Rear 3 P.H. Plow Rubber or UHMW Edge Kit
Includes FREE Ground Shipping in the lower 48 states in the USA
This product allows you to remove the steel plow wear edge and replace it with a custom designed and laser cut rubber or UHMW plow edge to eliminate pavement damage when clearing snow and other similar uses.
No more scraping the asphalt and damaging the sealer or leaving rust lines in the cement or concrete surface. These edge options turn your Woods 3ph blade into a snow clearing implement which is quiet, doesn't harm the surface and cleans the snow far better than the steel wear edge being replaced.
Our Standard Duty Blade Rubber Edge Kit includes the following
Custom laser cut, rubber plow edge material to provide extraordinary snow clearing results. The rubber plow edge height and thickness is based upon the plow's width, weight and intended use.
Wider plow blades will have thicker and taller rubber wear edges due to the plows greater weight. The rubber edge is produced to permit adjustment as used to make sure to provide the optimal clearing results.
We make all of our rubber plow edge to be double wear edge sided clearing edges. The extra material used to make these edges all double sided for twice the wear life is the most prudent use of the material. We no longer offer the single sided wear edges as less than 1% of customers requested the slightly less expensive single wear edge rubber material. Customer across all sizes of the plows have overwhelmingly preferred our double sided rubber wear edges or our double sided UHMW plow edges.
To mount our rubber plow edge, we use UHMW to fabricate our mounting straps. This UHMW product, which is Ultra High Molecular Weight composite polyethylene, is an extremely strong and friction resistant plastic material, to make all of our plow edge mounting straps. The UHMW won’t rust, doesn’t need to be painted or powder coated or other finish applied and the UHMW is also impact resistant to bending and twisting. UHMW is lighter than steel and for many uses, a superior product. It’s doesn’t chip or damage easily and its light weight and ships and installs more easily than the steel straps.
Installing either our Double sided rubber plow edge or our Double sided UHMW plow edge is very easy and straight forward. Here are the steps we suggest to get your plow ready for our new rubber or UHMW wear edge.
Simply remove the plow's steel plow edge and all hardware and set it aside with the hardware in the edge holes. Be very careful with the steel edge because if your plow has been used to clear snow on pavement, the steel wear edge is often very sharp from surface abrasion.
We suggest you wear heavy work gloves when removing the steel plow edge. Also, be careful as the steel plow edges can weigh up to 85 pounds depending upon the plows width. Don’t drop it on your feet, etc as serious injury can occur.
Make sure the plow moldboard is clean, free of all dirt and debris. If there is any bare metal or rust along the base of the plow or anywhere on the moldboard, we suggest you paint the plow to avoid rust, etc long term.
Install our new rubber edge and the UHMW Rubber Retention straps or our UHMW plow edge is simple. We provide instructions for both installation and use. and follow the installation instructions and you will find dramatically improved plow function and snow clearing results.
For Premium Wood 3ph Plows, Please refer to our Premium Plow kits. Premium Plow's have an additional letter in their model number, plus premium Woods 3ph plows offer blade offset, have blade end panels available as well as other options not offered on the Standard Woods Plow.
UHMW Plow Edge Kits for Woods Rear 3ph Plows
Many clients desire to replace their plows steel plow edge with our UHMW plow edge kit. The UHMW is ideal for being able to scrape the pavement clear of hard pack snow and ice. The UHMW is an ideal material for a plow edge as its extremely wear resistant, durable and a very low friction material. UHMW is actually self lubricating during use, which makes the surface friction level incredibly less than the steel edge.
Customer who want our UHMW Plow edges are those customers who
Want to be able the scrape the pavement of any ice or hard pack snow.
Who aren’t going to use their blade to clear areas of lawn or areas with grass as the UHMW edge will damage grass due to the edge scraping strength.
Those customers who want to get away from the screeching and grinding of the pavement friction of steel edges clearing snow. The UHMW is as tough as steel for clearing the pavement, but won’t damage the pavement and won’t leave behind rust or surface abrasion.
Our UHMW Edges are custom machined to mount on the Woods Plows. Our UHMW edges are double sided as well. When the first wear edge has worn, unbolt the UHMW edge, flip it over and reinstall it for a second wear period.
Our edges are all professionally machined to bolt on your plow with the hardware we include.
A Special Note about using UHMW Edges on 3ph Plows
UHMW is an ideal material for clearing snow from pavement as its tough, scrapes like a steel edge but doesn’t cause the surface abrasion the Steel blades do cause. BUT, it’s important to point out, that in some situations, the UHMW edge on the rear 3 point hitch plows can cause the blade to “shudder” or “chatter”, which can be an annoying occurrence.
What happens when a plow “chatters” or “shudders”? The plow is not clearing the snow smoothly, but is shaking and bouncing slightly at the same time. When the plow is acting this way, its not smoothly clearing snow and the clearing pass may need to be repeated. The vibration of the plow blade can be severe enough to be felt by the tractor operator.
Is chattering a problem with all plows that use UHMW edges? No, actually far from it. But chattering is definitely more likely to occur when the UHMW edge is used on a rear 3ph plow due to these factors;
the 3ph plows often don’t have down pressure and use the weight of the plow on the hitch as their only down pressure to clear the pavement.
No down pressure prevents the operator from pressing down on the blade to stop the chattering once it starts.
the 3ph plows are made for the blade to be very vertical, or nearly straight up and down during use. This positions the bottom edge of the UHMW flat on the pavement, which rarely occurs on front mounted plows due to their forward lean during use.
What design issues or 3ph plow factors make chattering less likely to occur?
when the 3ph has a hydraulic top link and down pressure can be applied
when the 3ph plow has hydraulic angling and they can adjust the plows surface encounter angle while using the plow.
When the operator can control the blade position and make adjustments while operating the tractor, the chattering is easier to prevent or stop once it starts.
However, when the blades adjustments are all manual, the chattering can only be stopped by either lifting the blade, stopping the tractor, etc.
Why does chattering or shuddering occur? Because the plow is very vertical on the 3ph plow and the flat bottom of the UHMW is grabbing the pavement on one side of the blade and then the other and releasing randomly, making the plows movement very uneven.
Is chattering damaging to the plow or pavement? No, the plow is just not smoothly clearing the pavement. This chattering occurs when the plow edge flat base encounters any dry pavement or even a slight rise in the pavement on one side of the plow or the other.
Its important to note that this doesn’t happen to all plows and it doesn’t happen to all pavement surfaces. Also, its not usually a constant occurrence when it does happen. We have some customers who have never encountered this experience, We have other customers who changed plow edges due to the chattering that was annoying to them. If you decide to put a UHMW edge on a rear blade just be aware this can happen and impact the snow clearing experience.
UHMW Mounting Straps are not for clearing snow from the pavement
Just for clarity, while the plow mounting straps for our rubber plow edge are made of UHMW and we also offer a UHMW plow edge, they plow mounting straps can NOT be used to clear snow. The UHMW straps are made to hold the rubber plow edge on the plow only.
Adjustments within the rubber plow edge
The rubber plow edge mounting straps are about 2” wide, 3/4” thick and designed to clamp the rubber edge to the steel plow moldboard. The rubber edge the UHMW straps holds on the plow is 6” wide and designed to allow vertical adjustment.
The actual UHMW wear edge, is 6” tall and 1” thick. It’s machined to mount where you have the first half of the UHMW wear edge on the bottom of the plow moldboard. As this wears with use, you have some adjustments to help keep the plow blade square and functioning properly.
When the bottom portion of the wear edge is worn away with plow use, you unbolt the edge, whether its the Rubber edge or the UHMW edge and flip the edge over and reinstall it. This is why we provide corrosion resistant hardware so you can flip the wear edge and resume use of your plow.
A Special Note about plow shoes and reducing pavement surface abrasion and damage.
Most customer who purchase the rubber plow edge or UHMW Plow edge for any plow, are trying to stop the pavement abrasion and surface damage. The best way to reduce this damage is by removing the steel wear surfaces from contact with the pavement. Make sure to raise your plows snowshoes so they aren’t continuing to grind on the pavement when you are using your new plow edge. We cover this in detail in our rubber or UHMW plow edge installation instructions.
Shipping and Delivery
Our rubber and UHMW edges ship via ground delivery. They ship in one length, up to 96” in total length. Any edges over 96” of length may be made in two pieces due to limits in material length on raw materials used to make our edges. All edges ship with new installation hardware.
Please see our other Woods Rear Plow Blade products for other options and alternatives. Thank you for considering this very reasonably priced pavement protection plow edge package.
