Rubber or UHMW, Which edge is best for my snow clearing needs?
Select which edge is best for you with these important details as your guide.
Pavement condition
Smooth, crack free pavement in good shape can use either our rubber or UHMW edges with very good results.
However, if your pavement is uneven, cracked has had surface repairs or has many pavement cracks or expansion joints then you should use our rubber plow edges to allow the edge to absorb impacts and still clean the pavement.
These pavement types should ONLY use our rubber plow edges;
brick pavers, pavement with numerous edges and any uneven pavement.
colored concrete, surface finished concrete, imprinted surfaces, etc.
Older surfaces which are unraveling or where the surface is showing signs of gravel material coming through.
pavement which is not smooth and has any raised edges or uneven pavement sections.
where you need to push snow off the pavement onto grass areas.
if you have sprinkler heads or other raised objects within the area plowed next to the pavement as rubber edges won’t harm most raised objects where steel and UHMW edges will cause damage.
if you are seeking QUIET plowing conditions and eliminating the steel edge banging on every pavement seam, crack or every time the plow is lowered to the pavement.
Many hotels, assisted living facilities, medical facilities and even more Home Owners Associations are requiring “no banging or scraping” plowing with the steel edge making noise during early and late hour snow clearing.
If your pavement is smooth, even and consistent, you can use our UHMW edges or our rubber edges.
If you have a dirt driveway or stone driveway, the rubber edge will leave the stones and gravel in the driveway, where our UHMW edges will tend to push the stones and gravel off the driveway and into the edges, etc.
Estimated Wear Duration of the Rubber and UHMW Plow Edges*
Residential Edges
Rubber Plow Edge - 125 residential Driveways per edge side, 250 in total
UHMW Plow Edge - 175 residential driveways per edge side, 350 in total
Heavy Duty Edges
Rubber Plow Edge - 200 residential drives per edge side, 400 in total
UHMW Plow Edge - 250 residential drives per edge side, 500 in total
*Assumes standard 300’ long, 12’ wide paved driveway. Excess down pressure will reduce edge wear life. These are only estimates and are not guaranteed. Apply only enough down force to properly clear the pavement. Avoid excess down pressure to prevent unnecessary plow edge wear. Damage or impacts with fixed objects can shorten the edge wear life.
