Frequently Asked Questions about this UHMW wear bar
Q. 1. - How do I know if this will fit my Deere snowblower?
A. 1. - If your front mounted Deere snowblower is the 46” front mounted, Single Stage snowblower, these parts are designed to perfectly replace the steel OEM parts.
Q. 2. - Is it difficult to replace parts on my blower?
A. 2. - There are 10 bolts through the wear bar and 4 bolts in the blower shoes. You remove the nuts from the bolts and remove the wear bar and the shoes. Most people report it takes them 25 to 40 minutes to replace the steel wear bar and shoes, depending upon the condition of the hardware.
Q. 3.- The bolts inside of the blower housing and outside on the shoes don’t have a head I can put a wrench on. How do I remove these bolts?
A. 3.- These are carriage bolts, which mean the hole is square and holds the bolt around the square shank on the carriage bolt. You just need to remove the nuts with a socket or wrench and then you can remove the bolts and replace the steel wear parts with the new UHMW wear parts.
Q. 4. - Do I need any special tools to install the UHMW wear bar on the 46” blower?
A. 4.- A socket and ratchet will remove the old bolts and install the new parts. If you have a hand held nut driver, its easier to start the flange nuts on the new bolts for the UHMW wear bar to install it.
Q. 5.- If the bolts are rusty or are worn, how do I remove them?
A. 5. - Often, the bolts can be snapped off with an impact tool, which makes the removal even easier. Otherwise, if they are very worn where the bolts have been grinding on the pavement, put the socket and ratchet on the bolts and many will fall apart when you twist them.
Q. 6. - If the wear bar is worn from scraping the pavement and the nuts are deformed from this wear, then how do I remove the bolts and nuts to replace the wear bar?
A. 6. - This often makes replacing the wear bar even easier. You can twist off the rusty and worn nuts and the bolts are simply pushed back out of the holes. If you have to drill out the bolts, use a 3/8” drill bit and hand drill. Center the drill in the rusty nut on the bottom of the bar and the nuts will come off quite easily when drilled. In fact, if you have trouble getting a socket to fit the nuts due to wear, move right to drilling the nuts and bolts as its often easier than removing the worn bolts and nuts with the socket.
Q.7.- How long will the UHMW material last compared to the steel wear bar and shoes?
A.7. - Used correctly, the UHMW wear bar will outlast the steel wear bar and shoes, usually 2 to 3 times the wear length.
Q.8.- How can the UHMW outlast the steel wear bar and shoes? Isn’t the UHMW a plastic material?
A.8.- Yes, UHMW is a very special product in the “plastic family”, however, UHMW is widely recognized as the ‘lowest surface friction” material available and it is designed specifically for surface friction applications. This product was made for these applications. Technically, UHMW is Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene.
Another reason why the UHMW will outlast mild carbon steel in most applications is the steel shoes on the blower have 1/8” of wear surface where the Severe Duty shoes we make of UHMW have 1” of wear surface on EACH SIDE of the shoe. The shoes can be flipped over when the first side has wear and start with the new 2nd side of the shoe.
And finally, the steel wear bar on the blower has 1/4” of wear surface where our UHMW wear material is 1” thick. The surface wear area of the steel under the blower is about 12 sq inches. The surface wear area of our UHMW wear bar is 138 sq inches, or nearly 12x the wear surface. These are reasons why the UHMW when installed and used correctly will outlast the steel wear in many situations.*
*Results vary based upon the down force applies and the operators experience and skills. All wear is estimated and varies between machine size, operator experience and many other factors.
